Apple quietly released iBeacons with iOS 7. Imagine walking to a store, walking into a beacon region in that store automatically presents data of that area to your iDevice: current promotions, coupons, item details, item whereabouts, indoor mapping, etc. you can even make payment within a beacon range, all using Bluetooth Low Energy. Apple has been turning to WiFi Direct (AirDrop) and now Bluetooth Low Energy (iBeacons) as alternatives for data transfer while everyone else is busy developing NFC. Cheaper. Bigger range. Lower battery consumption. No 'bumping of phones'. A simply brilliant! ;)
