Apple introduced the 7.9 inch iPad mini in 2012 with thin bezel design for a reason - to provide one-hand hold on a smaller lighter tablet. Samsung applied the slim bezel design on their 2013 Galaxy tab. ;)

Apple introduced the 10 inch iPad in 2010, and had a reason for the thick border frame design - to provide grip on a big heavy tablet. Samsung announced a 7 inch smaller, lighter tablet, with thick border design throughout 2010 till 2012.
